50 years of service

We’ve been working with people and communities to make positive change possible since 1965.

Our work has always evolved with the times but kept local people at its heart.

During the 1971 fuel crisis we worked with partners and volunteers to ensure that vulnerable people had fuel. Today, we fund grassroots projects which make residents’ projects a reality.

We look forward to continuing to support local people over the years to come through VALUES and our Children, Young People and Families department.

50 years: Empowering Volunteers

Our support has always allowed volunteers to change lives. In the 60s, we organised volunteer-led English classes for new arrivals. The 80s saw us respond to rising unemployment with volunteer-led job services.

Today, we’re at the forefront of finding ways to use the tried and tested route of volunteering to overcome modern challenges.

To date, we’ve worked with over 68,000 volunteers.

50 Years: Supporting people

The local VCS has changed a great deal since 1965

We’ve been here to help the Voluntary and Community Sector (VCS) thrive every step of the way. Parts of our work have remained essentially the same over the years.

For example, in the 60s and 70s when councils reorganised we were there ensuring groups understood the changes and were heard, just as we do today. We’ve also always provided practical hands-on support.

We’ve helped local groups raise over £25m since 1965.

Today, we remain as committed as ever to helping groups adapt, thrive and deliver life-changing services.

50 Years: Showcasing our Sector

The VCS is full of unsung heroes. We marked our 50th Birthday with a campaign shining a light on the positive change they make possible.

My Community My Story aimed to showcase stories from across the local VCS and raise public awareness of how our sector changes lives.
