Voluntary Action LeicesterShire (VAL) is a charity that gets people into volunteering, helps community groups and organisations thrive and provides essential services.

VAL has been part of the Voluntary and Community Sector (VCS) in Leicester and Leicestershire for over 50 years. Our work has always evolved with the times but kept local people at its heart.

During the 1971 fuel crisis we worked with partners and volunteers to ensure that vulnerable people had fuel. Today, we fund grassroots projects which make residents’ projects a reality.

Empowering Volunteers

Our support has always allowed volunteers to change lives. In the 60s, we organised volunteer-led English classes for new arrivals. The 80s saw us respond to rising unemployment with volunteer-led job services.

Today, we’re at the forefront of finding ways to use the tried and tested route of volunteering to overcome modern challenges.

Supporting people

Since 1965 we’ve been here to help the Voluntary and Community Sector (VCS) thrive every step of the way. Parts of our work have remained essentially the same over the years.

For example, in the 60s and 70s when councils reorganised we were there ensuring groups understood the changes and were heard, just as we do today. We’ve also always provided practical hands-on support.

Today, we remain as committed as ever to helping groups adapt, thrive and deliver life-changing services.
