Snooker legend Willie Thorne is urging charities and community organisations to fill their coffers with Comic Relief cash.

The Leicester Mercury has launched a campaign to give away £50,000.

The money is part of Comic Relief's Red Nose Day Community Cash fund, which aims to hand out sums of £500 to £1,000 to scores of needy causes in Leicester.

From lunch clubs to parent and toddler groups, any small organisation with an income of less than £50,000 a year is welcome to apply.

The initiative has been backed by snooker star and television personality Willie Thorne.

He said: "I think the Mercury's campaign is a great way for some of these groups to add some vital cash to their coffers and I would encourage as many people as possible to take advantage and apply."

For the next six weeks, we will be looking for the city's best examples of grassroots community work and giving local people a chance to stake a claim to the Red Nose Day Community Cash

Applications will be decided by a panel, which will include representatives from the Mercury, Comic Relief and Leicester Leicestershire and Rutland Community Foundation.

Katy Green , director of the foundation, which distributes cash among local charities, said: "It's very exciting for us to be involved with Comic Relief giving. Red Nose Day is hugely popular here, and it's very much part of our mission to help funders and donors to give where their funds are truly needed.

"The needs can be anything that is really helping make our counties better - from disabled children's playschemes to helping people into work.

"From research and support for serious illness, to wildlife protection - anything that makes Leicestershire and Rutland a better place to live."

It is the first time the project has come to the city - although Comic Relief has funded Leicester charities in the past.

A Comic Relief spokeswoman said: "Some of the most meaningful changes to people's lives are made at the grassroots of local communities.

"Local people are working hard to make a difference on their own doorsteps for people living tough lives.

"These grants show how a small amount of money can make a big difference."

The deadline is March 18, and groups are able to apply either by post or via the internet. The scheme is open to all registered charities or social enterprises.

The organisers say applications to support those who are disadvantaged through low income, rural or social isolation, age, disabilities, race, sexuality or gender will be prioritised.
