Charities and community groups from across Leicestershire turned out in force on Gallowtree Gate today to launch National Volunteers Week.
Over 70 local organisations exhibited at the event to celebrate the contribution of volunteers and inspire others to take part.
Volunteers play a vital role in all communities within Leicestershire and without them many services would cease to exist.
Zina Visa, Volunteer Co-ordinator for Headway a Leicestershire based charity that supports people with brain injuries commented on the importance of volunteers;
"Volunteers are so valuable to our charity they enable us to provide a one-to-one service for our users. We offer taster sessions for anyone interested in volunteering, this enables them to have an insight into the work they'll be involved in and decide if it is right for them."

Members of the general public attending the event had a wealth of opportunities to choose from such as conservation projects through to supporting Leicestershire Police.
Jude Barron former secondary teacher attended the event seeking volunteering opportunities in Leicestershire, said;
"After 25 years in teaching I'm looking for an interest that is going to keep me active, meet people and give me the personal reward you receive from helping people. There are so many opportunities to choose from I have looked at driving, working on a narrow boat and teaching adults. I just need to decide what I would like to do"

The event was attended by the City Major and Lord Major, who thanked volunteers for the contribution they have made locally to communities across Leicestershire.
