Current Sports Volunteering Opportunities

Leicester Marathon - Race Marshalls

Do you have some free time on Sunday 10 October to support the Leicester Marathon? This great local event, which raises money for two very deserving local charities; Loros and The Matt Hampson Trust, requires at least 100 volunteers to help make the event a success.

The race starts at 10am in the city centre and the route takes runners out towards Syston and Rearsby before circling back to the City centre. Marshalls are needed at all point along the route but particularly in the City centre.

Your role will involve marshalling the route, cheering on the runners, ensuring that pedestrians are aware that runners are about, and providing general support for the race. You can choose to volunteer in the morning from 8am-12.30pm or in the afternoon from 11.30am to 3.30pm. Volunteers who are available for the full day are also welcome or if you can only give a small amount of your time extra volunteers are needed at the race start for just 2 hours.

All volunteers will receive a marathon volunteer t-shirt and help with their travel expenses



Parkrun - Volunteers needed

Parkrun is a brand new running concept, which is being introduced to Leicester this year for the first time. Parkrun is a weekly running event, over a 5k course, which will take place on a marked route at Braunstone Park every Saturday morning. Parkrun is entirely volunteer led. It's a completely free event run by the community for the community. We are recruiting 4 teams of 5 volunteerst and each team will organise the parkrun one Saturday a month.

Parkrun takes place on Braunstone Park at 9am each Saturday.

Volunteers will be asked to attend a training session on 16 September followed by pilot/trial run on 18 September. The launch date for the actual run is 25 September.

If you would like to get involved please get in touch. We will continue to recruit volunteers over the next 6 months so please get in touch if you would like to volunteer at a later date.

A team of local sports development officers will support the volunteers during the intial weeks of the run. The roles include:

Race Director - has overall responsibility for ensuring that the team are available and there on time

  • Timer - clicks every runner through as they finish
  • Token Volunteer - hands every finisher a token, which they use to record their finishing time
  • Scanner - scans each runner's barcode and token into the parkrun hand held scanning device
  • Administration Volunteer - uploads the information from the race later in the day onto the laptop provided. Responds to queries and emails on the Parkrun website



Sports Development - Competition Manager Assistant

 Leicestershire and Rutland Sport are recruiting a volunteer to join the Competitions programme in LeicesterShire. The role will be to support the Senior Competition Manager and team of Competition Managers with the delivery of the Leicester-Shire & Rutland Competition Manager Programme. Roles and responsibilities will include; admin support, publicity, promotion and marketing, shared documents and website support, monitoring and evaluation, planning, formatting and structuring of competitions, liaison with School Sport Co-coordinators, Primary Link Teachers and teachers around schools competitions and supporting the delivery of School Sport Competitions and County Finals

This role will be ideal for a sports studies student or recent graduate as it provides an excellent opportunity to gain significant experience in the field.

Essential Skills Required: A sound working knowledge of Microsoft office; Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc. Good organisational, planning and communication skills. Works well both within a team, but can also work effectively on their own with set tasks.

Desirable Skills Required: Knowledge / skills in marketing, websites, planning and delivery of sport / competitions and knowledge of structures / formats of sports both locally and nationally.



Junior Golf Organiser

An interested and experienced golfer is needed to support the Junior Golf Programme at Ullsthorpe Golf Club. The role will involve attending Saturday morning junior training sessions, representing the junior section on club committees and liaising with the captain and junior captain on all junior matters. Over the winter season the volunteer will be involved in the planning and development of the junior programme.

A CRB check will be required for this post.



Athletics Volunteering - Sportshall Athletics

Volunteers are needed to support the Sportshall Athletics programme in Leicestershire. Sporthall is an indoor athletics event for children and a young person that introduces young people to competition in a fun team based format. Events involve up to 30 children doing a variety of athletic and multisport activities.

The Sportshall events will run as a Saturday afternoon league on a monthly basis, at a variety of venues around the county and city.

Volunteer support is needed to assist the coaches at the venues each month, and a volunteer is also needed to provide support with setting up and taking down equipment. Transport to venues can be provided if necessary.

A CRB check will be required for this post, which will be carried out by England Athletics



Health Promotion Assistant Leicester - 3x30 Pledge

Did you know that one in four people in the city are obese, one in three smoke and only one in four eat healthily - much worse than the national average? You can help to change this by volunteering with the 3x 30 campaigns. The 3x30 Pledge Campaign aims to increase the numbers of people taking part in physical activity and sport, and encourages them to undertake three 30-minute activities each week.

We would like to recruit a volunteer to help her get the message out at sport and health events throughout the City. The role would involve talking with the public about the 3x30 campaign and manning publicity stands, handing out leaflets etc at conferences and sports events. No specific knowledge of sport or health is required but you should have a general interest in sport and health, and you should enjoy talking to people.

Multi Sports Coach 2 Roles - Team Sports- Fulhurst Community College

"Team Sports" based at Fulhurst community College run sports sessions for young people every evening and weekend. They would like to recruit a volunteer to support their sessions by helping to plan and run activities and coach some of the sessions.This is a great to earn some really valuable coaching experience. No particular qualifications are needed, however a coaching qualification and/or experience of coaching would be really useful. The role will suit somebody who enjoys working with young people and is confident and outgoing in their approach. Hours are flexible as sessions are held every evening and weekend mornings.



Soft Touch Arts- Allexton and New Parks area

Soft touch Arts delivers a youth programme called MASH UP on Friday nights at Allexton Youth Club, and at other locations in New Parks and Beaumont Leys on Saturday evenings. The programme provides opportunities for young people to get involved in a wide variety of creative activities, to allow them to build new skills, gain confidence and have some fun. Some of the young people who attend have requested physical activities as part of the programme. A volunteer is needed to run some sports sessions with the group; basketball, multi sports, football etc. The idea would be to work with the group and plan activities that they would like to do.



East Midlands Netball Association

The association has 4 different opportunities:

  1. To be a part of the profile group - they are looking for people who have an understanding in business aspects of sporting areas.
  2. Coaching assistants - they are looking for people to assist lead coaches in sessions, which involves setting up equipment and getting involved with players. Knowledge of netball is required and a CRB is needed.
  3. Web designer - they are looking for someone who can keep the website up to date on a regular basis whilst also providing new ideas. The role requires the person to have good ICT skills and have the knowledge of the World Wide Web.
  4. Sport development - they are looking for volunteers to support local clubs working towards CAPS (Club Action Planning Scheme Support). The role requires organisational and administrative skills; knowledge of netball would be required.



Leicestershire Rutland Sport - Active Together - Assistant Activity Leader

The role will involve supporting the active together program at various locations in the county; therefore there are a number of opportunities for people. The role also involves:

  • Leadership of physical activity classes/ groups in the community for adults aged 16
  • Session planning and administration (setting up equipment, taking registers, collecting registration forms)
  • Supporting participants to learn new skills and become more active
  • Training may be available for volunteers who can commit to regularly supporting the leadership of Active Together sessions

The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympics Games will need around 70,000 volunteers undertaking a wide variety of roles to ensure that the Games are a success. These volunteers will be known as Games Makers. In the UK's biggest post-war volunteer recruitment campaign, LOCOG (London Organising Committee Olympic games) will be looking for dedicated and inspirational people representative of the diversity of London and the UK to apply for a wide variety of volunteer roles.

There are two types of Games Maker roles: specialists, in areas such as medical services, sport or press operations; and generalists, with roles including spectator assistants, uniform distributors and ticket checkers.
