The aim of the Stronger Communities Project is to strengthen communities across Leicestershire. We plan to do this through the encouraging the participation of local people to:
- Become involved in developing their community
- Get better informed
- Be engaged
- Feel empowered to influence local action, activities and services
- Promote equality and diversity
The Stronger Communities Team is building Social Capital in communities across Leicestershire; Social Capital is achieved through community cohesion and empowerment. Empowerment is giving communities the opportunities to identify and voice their needs, enabling them to take action to influence the decisions that affect them.
What is Community Cohesion? Community Cohesion is about enabling people, communities and groups to get along with each other by:
- Breaking down barriers between and across different communities and groups;
- Building understanding between people and communities;
- Building trust and confidence between people and communities;
- Embracing difference and diversity.
This then leads to greater harmony and a sense of belonging and unity.
This work comes under the umbrella of the LeicesterShire Together partnership, and is strategically managed by the Stronger Communities Board, which is made up from a broad selection of the partners involved. The project takes place across all seven districts of the county, and in particular in the 19 Priority Neighbourhoods listed in the LAA 2.
