Volunteers Week 2010 Highlights
National Volunteers’ Week was celebrated throughout Leicestershire between 1 – 7 June. Events were held throughout the County to both recognise the vital contribution of that volunteers make and to encourage others to volunteer.
Communities rely on the dedication of volunteers and Volunteers’ Week is a chance to celebrate and say thank you to the people who make a huge difference to the local area.
Many events were held throughout the week to give thanks and to raise the profile of volunteering. Here are some highlights from some of this year’s activities:
Wednesday 2 June
Volunteering Celebration, John Storer House, Loughborough
VAL and Voluntary Action Charnwood joined forces to put on a fabulous volunteering celebration. The event was packed full of volunteers along with staff from both organisations who came together to give thanks to volunteers in the Charnwood area.
Cllr Jill Vincent, Mayor of Charnwood and Lady Gretton, Lord-Lieutenant of Leicestershire both attended the event and said a few words of thanks before jointly cutting a celebratory cake for all to share.
Lady Gretton spoke of the crucial contribution that volunteers make to the local community and said she was delighted and honoured to have been invited to share the celebrations.
Mayor of Charnwood, Cllr Jill Vincent spoke of the enormous pleasure she gets in seeing and meeting people who make such a big commitment to volunteering.
She said: “Volunteering isn’t just about doing something nice, it’s about dedicating yourself over a period of time to the neighbourhood which is entirely admirable.”

Thursday 3 June
Volunteering Coffee Morning North West Leicestershire, The Marlene Reid Centre
VAL teamed up with MRC Community Action to host a vibrant volunteering coffee morning in Coalville. The event was full of volunteers and members from community organisations.
The event was also attended by the Chairman of Leicestershire County Council, Peter Osbourne and his wife Catherine and Councillor Nigel Smith, Chairman of North West Leicestershire District Council.

Volunteers celebrate their achievements
Volunteering Garden Party, Voluntary Action LeicesterShire
In-house volunteers were invited to a party on the VAL roof garden on Thursday 3 June. Volunteers from VAL projects such as ACE, VALUES and Vinvolved joined together in glorious sunshine to share food, drink and cake and to receive thanks for all their hard work and time given throughout the year.

Celebration Coffee Morning Hinckley & Bosworth, Community Action Hinckley & Bosworth
Volunteers and community group members celebrated their achievements with the Chairman of Leicestershire County Council, Peter Osbourne, his wife Catherine and Councillor Sandra Francks, Mayor of Hinckley and Bosworth over coffee and cake.
The event was a roaring success as volunteers shared their experiences and were gratefully thanked for their efforts.

Friday 4 June
Volunteering Blaby District, Braunstone Civic Centre
Members of the local community joined together to celebrate volunteering in Blaby District on Friday 4 June. They event was a great success as new volunteers registered with Volunteering Advisor for VAL, Aimee Packwood.
The event was also attended by Andrew Ingles, Chief Executive of Voluntary Action Blaby and local volunteers including Delia Barrow who has been volunteering for over 20 years.

Monday 7 June
Volunteering celebration Oadby & Wigston, the Bassett Centre, South Wigston
The celebration for Oadby & Wigston was held by VAL and staff from Community Action Oadby & Wigston. Although this event was on a smaller scale to the other events it was a success none the less and new volunteers registered with Volunteering Advisor for VAL Aimee Packwood.

Volunteering Celebration Harborough District, The Settling Rooms, Market Harborough
The Volunteering Celebration in Market Harborough held jointly by VAL and Voluntary Action South Leicestershire was packed full of volunteers who all enjoyed a fabulous array of cakes and refreshments.
The event was attended by Lady Gretton, Lord-Lieutenant of Leicestershire who spent a great deal of time talking to all the volunteers who attended the event who shared their experiences with her.
The event was also attended by members of Harborough District Council including Chairman of Harborough District Council Councillor Rosita Page who also spent a lot of time talking to volunteers from the local area.
